BOYS TENNIS SCORES A 3-PEAT WITH A SWEEP @ STATE

The Lone Peak Boys Tennis team won every classification on Saturday May 19th to sweep the 6 A competition and win a 3rd straight State Championship.

At first singles, Brigham Andrus rolled through the competition to win the No. 1 Singles title, losing just two games in four matches. In the final, Andrus defeated Giovanni Claus of Herriman 6-1, 6-1.

At 2nd singles, Micah Heimuli was locked in an epic battle with Weber’s Bridger Harrison in Class 6A No. 2 Singles, working to a tiebreaker for the championship. Heimuli had already taken a medical timeout for cramping in the 3rd set that left him in excruciating pain so he only had two options: Forfeit or find a way to stand up. He managed to get to his feet. Then inexplicably, he won. Down 6-2 in the tiebreaker, Heimuli scored the final six points to claim a thrilling 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory and the state championship. Lone Peak coach John  La Cognata— retiring after 18 years at the helm of the program — said Heimuli’s inspiring finish was one for the ages.
Micah told me, ‘Get me to stand up and I won’t fall down again,’ ” La Cognata said. “Talk about gut checks. He showed an amazing will. What a performance.”

Freshman Tyler Wells won the No. 3 Singles title. Wells topped American Fork’s Easton McBeth 6-0, 6-2 in the final. Niles Cochran and Josh Bearss won the No. 1 Doubles title, taking care of American Fork’s Dane Peterson and Ben Roper 6-1, 6-4. Niles and Josh had an epic semifinal match with Bingham that went 2 ½ hours, including a 25 minute game at 2-2 in the 3rd set. In 2nd Doubles, it was Alex Miller and Josh Weichers defeating Bingham’s Austin Cox and Ben Crane 6-2, 6-3.

Heimuli’s clutch finish was the capper of a dominating day for Lone Peak tennis. The Knights won all five categories to earn the first 6A team title, and 3rd straight team title, scoring 30 points. American Fork was second with 13 points.
